George Ace Selvedge shirt

We are proud to introduce Nudie’s regular fit shirt, George, made from the exceptional Dry Ace Selvage fabric. This remarkable textile weighs 14.2 oz (around 400 grams) and features a rustic texture with a deep, reddish indigo color, making it a true masterpiece. Produced by the renowned Shinya Mills in Okayama, Japan, it showcases the art of refining the natural imperfections of selvedge denim.

The story behind Dry Ace Selvage is just as interesting as the fabric itself. It all started with a vintage, unbranded pair of jeans—likely from the 1950s—discovered in a thrift store somewhere in the United States. Although the jeans showed signs of heavy wear and significant fading, what stood out most was their incredible texture. Eventually, the garment made its way to Japan, where the denim was carefully studied and recreated down to the smallest detail.

Reverse-engineering vintage denim is a hallmark of the Japanese denim craft. Dry Ace Selvage is a striking example of this dedication, as well as the collaborative approach often used in premium Japanese denim production. The highly irregular slub yarns are spun by Yamachu Mengyo Co. Ltd. in Osaka. The warp yarns are then dipped no fewer than twenty times in pure indigo dye, creating a deeply saturated surface with a noticeably substantial undyed core—thanks to the work of Kaihara Co. Ltd. in Hiroshima. Finally, the fabric is expertly woven at low tension on vintage looms by Shinya Mills in Okayama. Each specialist focuses on what they do best, and the final product beautifully reflects the craftsmanship present at every stage of denim production.

Ace gets its distinctive character from its thick, highly irregular yarns, the generous use of indigo dye, and the low-tension weaving technique. These elements contribute to the appealing, rugged appearance the fabric develops over time. As the denim ages, the dye gradually wears away from
